When choosing a broker to trade with, there are several key factors to consider, such as their fee structure, location, regulatory compliance, licensing, customer support, and how easily you can deposit or withdraw funds.

In South Africa, brokers are regulated by the FSCA (Financial Sector Conduct Authority). Any broker operating within the country must comply with the FSCA’s licensing requirements.

There are two essential licenses that South African brokers, who operate, market, and execute trades within the country’s borders, must obtain:

1. FSP License: Brokers must hold a valid Financial Services Provider (FSP) license, which covers the relevant categories of their business. This license is governed by the FAIS (Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services) Act.
2. ODP License: In August 2018, the FSCA introduced the Over The Counter Derivatives Provider (ODP) license. This license allows FSPs to offer OTC products, such as CFDs (Contracts for Difference) and options, to South African clients, as these are considered derivative products requiring specific authorisation.
